Frank Varga
Varga was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1943,
and has resided in Belgium, France, Italy, Canada and the United States.
After serving an apprenticeship with his father, Professor Ferenc Varga,
an Internationally acclaimed sculptor, he received a scholarship to study
at the Academia di Belle Arte in Florence, Italy. He worked under Florence's
great sculptor, Antonio Berti whose great works are found in the Vatican
National Museum Collection, establishing the beginnings of Frank Varga's
International reputation.
Receiving his Doccumento di Arte from the Accademia
di Belle Arte Florence Italy in1964, he returned to the United States to
continue his association with his father Professor Ferenc Varga and also
earned a BA in fine arts in 1980 from Honolulu University.
Most sculptors who came to the modernist orbit moved
on a route form Expressionism to the other forms of abstraction and even
back to traditional realistic art. This trend is exemplified in Frank Varga's
work of the past years. His works in the 1960s were along orthodox lines
of classical sculpture. The period between the 1970s and 1980s is associated
with more Abstract Expressionism. The beginning of the 1990s shows a return
to Modem Figurative Art. This also means a return to the more realistic,
to the intimate, to the dramatic or lyrical realization of his sculptured
forms
His commissioned work took him back to Italy on
numerous occasions working on a 50' bronze for the Fort Lincoln in Washington,
D.C. and a monumental marble carving for Minneapolis, MN. During these periods
he became acquainted with more of his contemporaries from Henry Moore to
Marini Marino and Jaques Lipchitz. They, in turn, had a profound influence
on his more modem works.
Varga has produced literally hundreds of sculptures ranging in size and materials such as wood, metal and stone displaying his versatility in the sculptured media. He is also noted for his monumental sculptures. One of International acclaim was dedicated in 1986 in the harbor of Bremerhaven, Germany. It is over 6 meters high, titled the Immigrants, and it faces towards the United States. Every ship entering the port sails past the sculpture. The dedication of this statue was coordinated with the re-dedication of the Statue of Liberty, making this event a most celebrated International occasion. His work is displayed in many cities throughout the world, including a portrait of John F. Kennedy in the White House and a bronze portrait bust of Pope John Paul in the Vatican.
Frank Varga's dedication to his art, with his
fantastic attention to form, detail and rhythm in each piece of sculpture
he creates, insures his place in the world as one of the truly gifted living
sculptures.
